| MerseyBroadband was a multi-million pound project set up to drive the uptake and innovative use of broadband in the Greater Merseyside area, and ran from 2004 to 2006. MerseyBroadband encouraged SMEs to embrace innovative ways of working, such as off-site data storage, teleworking and application service provision (ASP). Through a range of pilot projects, events and technical support, the project introduced broadband-based business solutions to over 700 companies. As well as businesses, MerseyBroadband helped community projects and charities gain access to broadband and its benefits. These included the massively successful Kensington Vision, which helped bring training and community focus to a previously technologically-deprived area. Other beneficiaries included MiHealth, which used broadband to deliver support for cancer patients, and Onteca, who developed an online gaming development platform for community-based organisations. MerseyBroadband was delivered through a partnership of IT user group MERIT, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, and John Moores University’s ICDC. It was funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency and ERDF Objective One and supported by the GMDDA. You can read the MerseyBroadband final report here. Although the project is now finished, IT support and advice is still available from MERIT. Contact us by e-mail or call us on 08700 633 994.
